Disability Awareness Month
Rare by Design celebrates Disability Month, paying tribute to the 1990 signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by President George H.W. Bush. This landmark legislation shattered the walls of exclusion, promoting equality and prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities. Throughout July, individuals with disabilities and rare diseases come together nationwide, engaging in community events, parades and awareness initiatives.
We recognize that disabilities and rare diseases do not discriminate, and they may not always be immediately apparent. It is crucial to honor each person's uniqueness and demonstrate the affirming and empowering nature of visual representation. This month provides an opportunity to embrace one's disability or rare disease, fostering self-love and promoting acceptance and visibility.
Unfortunately, society sometimes over-generalizes disability, leading to dehumanization and defeat. Rare by Design aimed to break the stigma and create exposure through our 2023 "Inclusion Is Always In" billboard campaign, utilizing visual representation (see behind-the-scenes photos below). We believe that disabilities and rare diseases are natural components of diversity within the human race. We are all individuals first, making a significant impact on our communities and the world.
As Rare by Design, we are proud to shine a light on the progress we have made since the ADA's signing. However, we also look ahead with optimism, envisioning a future that is even more inclusive and brighter for our community. Through advocacy, education, and the gradual dismantling of exclusionary barriers, we strive to create a society where everyone is embraced and empowered.
Together, brick by brick, let us continue advocating, educating, and breaking down more walls of exclusion. Rare by Design stands committed to promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and fostering a future where all individuals with disabilities and rare diseases are seen, heard and valued.
